Many beginners are intimidated by the idea of starting with a large space and planning out their first garden. There are several products that come to your rescue!
One of the best inventions to come along for gardeners who have little space, have moved to an apartment or just beginning, is the Earthbox. I have several and grow tomatoes, squash and other vegetables organically in this self contained system. It has a special water reservoir. You just keep it filled and the correct watering is done for you. Proper fertilizer is included in the kit. I have tried to make these boxes myself and found that it is better and simplier to just buy them!
Another project that is one step further into a garden is called Square Foot Gardening. This is a method of using a planter type box (or raised bed) that has a special soil mix. Square foot grids are placed over the soil and you plant a seperate vegetable or herb in each square foor. You can learn more by goinf to the official site for Square Foot Gardening.

Hi,
I've been thinking much more lately about container gardening - not just for utilising small spaces but also for deterring some pests. I've seen some great ideas on using unusual containers.
