Cheap DIY fogger aeroponic system

In my post about basic the basics of hydroponics I mentioned the potential high cost of entry but with a little creativity this can be avoided.  I went through this exercise and here is a pretty inexpensive way to try out hydroponics without having to spend hundreds on a prebuilt system.  The solution I came up with cost me $1.00 to setup though I did have many of the items on hand, if I had to purchase everything cost would be in the $10-15 range.

Beginners Guide to Homegrown Hydroponics

Do you remember when "hydroponics" was an activity only performed by science geeks or mull-heads? Homegrown labs had that clandestine feel about them and anytime you mentioned hydroponics it was met by dubiously raised eyebrows.

Much has changed since those days with homegrown hydroponics now hitting mainstream markets. And the reasons for this are multi-faceted; smaller homes, higher density living, financial constraints on families and even the emerging desire for people wanting to grow their own foods.

The problem is, unless you're prepared to fork out some serious dollars for a production-level kit most home gardeners won't venture into this arena. They're more likely to purchase from others who grow their produce organically than do it themselves which is a tragedy for the progression of this technology as a homegrown activity.

So, let's boil it down into some bite-sized pieces and hopefully you'll build up the courage to give it a go yourself.

Growing fish in the backyard

Many of us are looking for ways to produce organic food in our homes. There was a time we had an aquaponics system in our backyard, and I thought it would be a good idea to talk about it again, despite the fact that our system failed and we sold it.

Aquaponics is a way of growing fish and organic vegetables in one system. The way we set ours up was with two grow beds on top of a 3000 litre (792 gallons) fish tank. We kept silver perch in our pond, they're an Australian native freshwater fish. We had our system from March 2007 until the end of February 2008.

Product Review: Hydroponically Challenged No More

 When I was a kid, I experimented with hydroponics (and not for the typical reasons teenagers do). I was sure that by the time I was an adult, this would be a valuable skill as we would all be living on the moon and maybe even Mars as my teachers had rather firmly told me that we would have decimated this plant due to our rapid deforestation of the rain forest. That didn’t happen. I guess we just did not cut down enough trees to make it worth NASA’s while (don’t tell my sister I said that). Which is probably a good thing as I killed everything I tried to grow in water. Hydroponics requires a little know how. It was quite a few years later on a trip to Canada where I saw, from a distance, the hydroponic future of farming. There were many greenhouses in some of the colder parts of Canada where vegetables were (and maybe still are) grown for commercial consumption. It was always one of the reasons I never worried my pretty little head too much about the future of the vast amount of farmland here in the States. Using hydroponics, you can always go up.

Organic fruit in the backyard

I felt the seasons change slightly yesterday. There was a nip in the air when I took the dogs outside early in the morning, and although it didn't stay cool for long, I know Autumn is not far away. Autumn is my favourite time of year. It's still warm in the daytime, cool at night and there is that wonderful change happening in the garden. Trees shift from green to gold and red, leaves fall, flowers bloom and we plant our main vegetable garden for the year.

There is not much growing now, just a few late eggplant and cucumbers, my experimental pineapple, herbs and fruit. It's the fruit that keeps us going at the moment, although we aren't eating much of it yet but there are lemons and bananas growing, plenty of passionfruit almost ready to pick and the blueberries are just starting.
